More Georgians than ever trust the EU, according to latest opinion poll
The EU continues to be the most trusted international institution among Georgians, trusted by 81% of respondents (up three points on last year and 15 since the surveys began). An overwhelming majority of Georgians (87%) also feel their country has good relations with the European Union, according to the 2024 annual survey of opinion in Georgia, 12 points more than in 2016, when the surveys began.
This latest survey was conducted in March 2024 and involved face-to-face interviews with a representative sample of 1,000 people across the country. The opinion polls have been carried out annually by the EUNEIGHBOURS east Programme in Georgia and the five other countries of the Eastern Partnership since 2016.
A clear majority (60%) of Georgians have a positive image of the EU, up six points on last year, and compared to just 5% who have a negative image of the Union.
Indeed, more than four out of five (81%) of those asked at the time of the field work in March said they would vote to join the European Union if a referendum was held – up seven points on the same question last year.
More than three-quarters (77%) of Georgians agreed that disinformation posed a threat to national security, and 86% would welcome greater EU support in combating disinformation. Georgians would also like their government to cooperate more with civil society in countering disinformation, the survey found.
This year, a record 85% said they were aware of the EU’s financial support, 25 points up on 2016, and 49% said it was effective; 44% would welcome even more support on education, 40% on economic development, 37% on health.
