Germany donates extra €80 million to Ukraine Energy Support Fund
On 10 October, Germany gave an additional grant of €80 million to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund, raising its total contribution to €299.6 million.
This financial instrument was established for funding the urgent repair of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure damaged by Russian attacks. It is managed by the Energy Community Secretariat, co-chaired by the European Commission, with contributions from governments, international organisations, and corporate donors. As of 11 October, the fund had received €697 million.
The latest grant, provided by the German Federal Foreign Office, will be immediately disbursed to finance decentralised generation equipment and repairs, supporting Ukraine through the challenging winter months following relentless Russian attacks.
“In 2024 alone, Ukraine has suffered a loss of more than 9 GW of installed generation capacity due to Russian attacks. This has resulted in millions of Ukrainians experiencing frequent rolling blackouts and unplanned power outages,” the Energy Community Secretariat said in a press release. “The start of the heating season in Ukraine is 15 October. As winter approaches, these vulnerabilities will be exacerbated, forcing more people to flee affected regions – whether relocating within Ukraine or seeking refuge abroad.”
