Artemij Vashkevich, a Young European Ambassador (YEA) since 2023, has become one of the winners of an international competition, ‘Human rights: camera action!’, launched by the Council of Europe.

The contest aimed at raising awareness about human rights and civic activism among young people across all 46 member states, in the context of the 75th anniversary of the Organisation and the Council of Europe Days project, telling the Council of Europe’s story. It invited young people to use their smartphones or digital cameras to convey a creative vision of human rights in Europe through a photograph or a short video.

The winning content was exhibited at the Council of Europe headquarters (Strasbourg, France) between 6-8 November 2024. The winning photos and videos will also be published on the Council of Europe’s dedicated websites, social media posts and may also be exhibited in Council of Europe offices and in member States.

The Young European Ambassador Artemij Vashkevich, a Belarussian citizen who lives under international protection in Poland, won the competition in the video category.

“Submitting my video I didn’t expect to win – I did it to let out some of my emotions,” Artemij  said. “But since coming to Strasbourg I was very surprised how many people were touched by my work. I’m delighted to know that the Belarusian language was heard during the World Forum in Strasbourg, and moreover, a Belarusian voice.”

The Young European Ambassadors (YEAs) initiative brings together socially engaged youth from the six Eastern Partner countries, the European Union and the United Kingdom to foster dialogue and to raise awareness about the EU and its cooperation with its Eastern partner countries.
