Moldova: EU and UNDP help create Intermunicipal Development Association in Ungheni region
Twenty-three communities in the Ungheni region have created an Intermunicipal Development Association (IDA). The initiative was supported by the ‘EU4Moldova: Focal Regions’ programme, funded by the European Union and implemented by UNDP and UNICEF.
The IDA headquarters were inaugurated on 4 April, at the Ungheni City Hall.
The aim of the association is to improve public services, attract investments, modernise local infrastructure, and implement regional projects. The EU and UNDP have provided institutional support for setting up the IDA. An Intermunicipal Council was set up, bringing together representatives of 23 communities that have decided jointly to provide public services. These councils received legal assistance to institutionalise intermunicipal cooperation.
An IDA ‘Cahul’ will soon be set up in the Cahul region.
The ‘EU4Moldova: Focal regions’ Programme (2019-2025) supports intelligent, inclusive and sustainable social-economic development in the regions of Cahul and Ungheni to ensure better standards of living to the citizens. The programme has a total budget of €23 million, is funded by the European Union, and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
