The Role of Parliaments in Promoting Gender Equality During Ukraine’s EU Accession Process
This publication outlines the critical functions of parliaments in advancing gender equality within the context of Ukraine’s accession to the European Union. It emphasizes the multifaceted roles that legislative bodies play, including harmonizing national legislation with EU standards, monitoring governmental actions, disseminating information to the public, and engaging in international and inter-parliamentary cooperation. The document highlights the establishment of specialized committees within the Verkhovna Rada, such as the Committee on Ukraine’s Integration into the EU and the Subcommittee on Compliance with International Human Rights Obligations and Gender Policy, which are instrumental in addressing gender-related issues during the integration process. Furthermore, it provides recommendations for enhancing parliamentary activities to accelerate the achievement of equal rights and opportunities for women and men in Ukraine, aligning with EU principles and values.
