Women in the rural economy in Georgia
This policy brief highlights the economic conditions and employment trends of women living in rural areas of Georgia, who constitute over half of the rural population. Despite their substantial presence, a significant number of rural women are either economically inactive or engaged in vulnerable employment. The brief explores the structural barriers and social norms contributing to this status quo, including limited access to paid employment, traditional gender roles, and insufficient support systems. It also proposes key strategies to increase women’s participation in the rural economy, such as improving access to vocational training, childcare services, and tailored employment programmes. The document was developed by UN Women Georgia in the framework of the projects ‘Women’s Economic Empowerment in the South Caucasus’ (funded by SDC and ADC) and ‘Good Governance for Gender Equality in Georgia’ (supported by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs).
