EBRD announces new Head of Operations in Moldova

[post_audio_speech]

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has announced the appointment of Giuseppe Grimaldi to head the EBRD’s operations in Moldova from 1 October 2025.

Grimaldi currently holds a London-based position as Head of Sector Reforms for Sustainable Infrastructure. Once he starts in his new position, he will be based in Chisinau, Moldova. He will report to Arvid Tuerkner, the EBRD’s Managing Director for Ukraine and Moldova.

Grimaldi moved from private-sector work in Italy to the EBRD in 2014, working as a London-based economist. In 2016, he moved to Ukraine to focus on the energy sector across eastern Europe and the Caucasus. On his return to London in 2021, Grimaldi was promoted to Associate Director, Senior Sector Economist. He took up his current role in 2022, in which he has been instrumental in establishing the first EBRD policy framework for state-owned enterprises.

Mr Grimaldi’s regional experience in supporting reforms that align countries more closely with EU regulations will inform his work in Moldova, an EU candidate country.

Mr Grimaldi succeeds Catarina Bjorlin Hansen, who takes up an appointment as EBRD Head of Iraq this month.

The EBRD is a major institutional investor in Moldova, having invested more than €2.7 billion in 185 projects in the country since 1992.
