E-COURSE: TRAUMA MANAGEMENT
Oleh Novak
is a Ukrainian therapist, supervisor, trainer, and certified specialist in the EMDR method in psychology. With 25 years of experience in addressing psychological trauma, including post-traumatic stress disorder and other conditions arising from past traumatic events, he has provided care to both military personnel and civilians. His clients include journalists, whom he has assisted in managing trauma related to armed conflict and unrest. He teaches techniques for psychological support and personal psycho-emotional maintenance, which are critically important in the context of war.
Introduction:
Experiencing or witnessing combat, serious accidents, sexual violence, and assault can result in immediate post-trauma reactions. The nature and degree of an individual’s acute reaction depends on various factors, including prior trauma experience, genetic predisposition, training, level of personal threat, and health status before exposure. Even if a person does not develop acute or chronic mental illness, exposure still carries risks, particularly if occurring over an extended period. Journalists are closer to the epicentre of traumatic events and consequently have a higher risk of mental impacts. Immediate management of acute psychological trauma in conflict zones can help mitigate the risks of prolonged short-term distress and the development of post-traumatic stress disorder or other mental illnesses. A course developed by therapist Oleh Novak aims to reduce these risks by teaching participants to recognise trauma symptoms and techniques for psychoemotional hygiene and mutual psychological support.
