Armenia: Head of EU Delegation attends conference on development of rural and small urban areas
On 11 September, the Head of the European Union’s Delegation to Armenia, Ambassador Vassilis Maragos, attended a conference on the ‘Balanced Development of Rural and Small Urban Areas in Armenia through the LEADER Approach’.
The conference was organised as part of the ‘EU Local Empowerment of Actors for Development in Lori and Tavush regions’ project (EULEAD4Lori and Tavush Regions). It was attended by government representatives, international guests, development partners and local actors.
The conference highlighted the results of five years of implementing the EU LEADER methodology in Armenia and to discuss the future of Local Action Groups. This methodology promotes inclusive and sustainable growth and improves livelihoods of rural populations in Lori and Tavush regions. The key element of this approach is the use of Local Action Groups (LAG) bringing together local authorities, local businesses and civil society organisations which drive local development. Eight LAGs are currently operational in Tavush, Lori and Shirak – they provide financing for local development initiatives in their territories.
The EULEAD4Lori and Tavush Regions project is funded by the European Union and implemented by the UNDP, in partnership with the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation and in close collaboration with the Armenian Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure.
