Belarus: EU expresses condolences on the death of another political prisoner

The European Union Delegation to Belarus has expressed its condolences on the death of Andrei Padniabenny, a political prisoner under Alexander Lukashenko’s regime.

The EU Delegation published the words of Anitta Hipper, lead spokesperson for the foreign affairs and security policy of the EU, who said: “Andrei Padniabenny, 36, is the 9th political prisoner to die in jail since 2020; 1,200 remain imprisoned in inhumane conditions.” Seh added: “Lukashenka’s regime must be held accountable.

Andrei Padniabenny was a Russian citizen who had been living in Belarus since childhood. In 2022, he was sentenced to 15 years in a medium-security penal colony for alleged extremist activities. He died on 3 September 2025 in the Mahiliou penal colony.
