Dialogue on gender data unites stakeholders in Armenia
On 17 June, key stakeholders united to advance the collection and use of gender data in Armenia at a ‘Dialogue with ArmStat: Navigating Challenges, Identifying Opportunities’, jointly organised by the Statistical Committee of Armenia (ArmStat), UN Women, GIZ and the EU-funded EU4GenderEquality Reform Helpdesk project.
The half-day roundtable highlighted the importance of gender data for designing evidence-based policies and programmes by the public sector, the private sector, academia, and research organisations. The dialogue focused on the challenges that Armenia’s national data producer, ArmStat, faces in collecting and producing gender data, and identified opportunities to enhance gender data collection in future.
The EU4Gender Equality Reform Helpdesk’s Senior Expert in Armenia, Gohar Shahnazaryan, highlighted the Reform Helpdesk’s readiness to continue collaborating with ArmStat and all interested parties to strengthen gender data nationwide. A number of government institutions – including the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs (Police), among others – highlighted their contribution to the production of gender data and efforts to bridge data gaps.
The event also spotlighted the contributions of civil society organisations, businesses, academia, and research organisations. A representative of the Armenian Coalition against Violence against Women, Anna Hovhannisyan, pointed to gaps in gender data in Armenia, including a lack of disaggregation by different groups of women, which makes it challenging to conduct effective advocacy campaigns or design responsive programmes.
Over 70 participants took part in the dialogue, representing government institutions, local businesses, civil society, and international and local organisations. Participation was higher than anticipated, reflecting a demand for collaborative discussions on gender data in Armenia.
The dialogue directly supports Armenia’s Statistical Programme for 2024-2028, which prioritises improvements in the collection and use of gender-sensitive data and Armenia’s commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 5 on gender equality and women’s empowerment, and related goals on good health, education, decent work and climate action.
The EU4Gender Equality Reform Helpdesk project’s support for the dialogue is part of its broader assistance for gender equality and women’s empowerment in the Eastern Neighbourhood region, including in Armenia, by supporting reforms informed by the use of gender-disaggregated data.
