EU-backed Transport Community enhances road safety around educational institutions in Moldova

On 23 September, the Permanent Secretariat of the Transport Community hosted an event which addressed the issue of road safety around educational institutions by promoting the Safer to School guidelines.

The discussion was organised in Chișinău in partnership with Slovenian authorities and with the support of the European Union and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development of Moldova.

Safer to School guidelines offer ready-to-implement measures which can increase road safety for children around schools. They were developed by the Slovenian Infrastructure Agency and are currently being successfully implemented in Slovenia.

The director of the Permanent Secretariat of the Transport Community, Matej Zakonjšek, spoke at the event that school children “should have no fear of danger.” He added that “the reality is different” and that “our school zones are not as safe as they should be.” “Through our Action Plan for Road Safety, we are working hand-in-hand with Moldova’s authorities to achieve this goal,” he concluded.

The number of fatalities and seriously injured children due to road crashes in Moldova is worrying, says a press release by the EU Delegation to Moldova. The country recorded 87 fatalities in road crashes per million inhabitants in 2024, which starkly contrasts with the EU average of 44 fatalities per million inhabitants. The Transport Community and Moldovan authorities aim to reduce the number of fatalities and serious injuries by 50% by 2030 and reach 0 deaths on the road by 2050.

The Transport Community, in collaboration with Slovenian authorities, will support the Moldovan authorities in implementing the Safer to School guidelines.

The Transport Community is an international organisation which aims to integrate the Western Balkans, observe participants’ transport markets into the EU and support the region in implementing EU transport legislation. It includes EU member states, the Western Balkans, and three observing participants (Georgia, the Republic of Moldova, and Ukraine). The Transport Community’s Action Plan for Road Safety seeks to significantly reduce road fatalities and injuries.
