The European Union has provided the Border Police of the Republic of Moldova with essential equipment to modernise technical infrastructure and border communication systems, the EU Delegation to Moldova announced on 29 October.

The EU donation, valued at around €280,400 (over 5 million MDL), was provided through the EU Border Assistance Mission to Moldova and Ukraine (EUBAM).

This donation responds to the urgent needs expressed by the national authorities of the Republic of Moldova in the context of the refugee crisis and border security concerns. The new equipment will also align the Republic of Moldova’s border security standards with EU norms and tools, including the European Border Surveillance System (EUROSUR).

EUBAM helped to procure and install a modern telephone exchange system, ensuring secure and efficient communication between Border Police subdivisions and patrols, and enabling faster coordination and response on the ground.

A state-of-the-art video wall controller, essential for video monitoring and coordination of border patrols, was also donated. This system integrates video signals from various checkpoints, facilitating a quick and efficient response to incidents.

With EUBAM support, the Border Police’s Green Line has also been equipped with an automated call-handling system, allowing operators to focus on more complex cases.

“The equipment delivered will serve as the foundation for the operations centre, enabling real-time monitoring, visualisation, and analysis of video data through secure channels,” said the Head of EUBAM Mission, Slawomir Pichor.
