EU project launches work to improve water and sanitation infrastructure in Moldova

On 29 May, work began on the construction of wastewater treatment facilities in Capriana, in the Straseni district of Moldova, as part of the EU-funded ‘EU4Moldova: Local Communities’ programme.

The new facilities will serve more than 1,000 residents of the communities of Capriana, Gălești, and Scoreni. Once the work is completed, the improved infrastructure will provide local communities with access to modern and safe sanitation.

The project includes the construction of modern local treatment facilities and the laying of new sewerage networks connecting public institutions such as schools, kindergartens, medical centres and town halls. Conditions will be created to enable homes and businesses in the surrounding area to connect effectively to the new networks.

The total investment amounts to approximately €1.82 million, which has been provided by the European Union, Austrian Development Cooperation and local administrations.

Also on 29 May, the programme held its third annual conference in Capriana, with the theme ‘Water for Sustainable Communities’. The event brought together key actors and beneficiaries – development partners, representatives of national and local authorities, experts and community members – to review progress, exchange expertise and outline the future development of the programme.

The ‘EU4Moldova: Local Communities’ programme aims to improve the quality of life of local communities. It is implemented as a Team Europe Initiative, with financial support from the European Union, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the Austrian Development Agency and Polish aid.
