EU top officials congratulate Moldova on saying “clear yes” to a European future
“The people of Moldova have spoken, and their message is loud and clear. They chose democracy, reform, and a European future in the face of pressure and interference from Russia,” European Council President António Costa posted on X, congratulating Moldova on the victory of the pro-European ruling party in the parliamentary elections held on 28 September.
President Maia Sandu’s Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) won 50.2% of the vote, compared to 24.2% for the Patriotic Bloc, a Russian-leaning party.
António Costa was joined by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, EU High Representative Kaja Kallas, and European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos.

Several election officials verify and count the ballots after polls close at the Spiru Haret Squiruminet Lyceum polling station in Chisinau during the parliamentary election.
“Moldova, you’ve done it again. No attempt to sow fear or division could break your resolve,” von der Leyen said on X. “You made your choice clear: Europe. Democracy. Freedom. Our door is open. And we will stand with you every step of the way. The future is yours.”
EU High Representative Kaja Kallas also noted that Moldova’s vote is “a clear yes” to a European future.
“Despite Russia’s massive efforts to spread disinformation and buy votes, no force can stop a people committed to freedom,” she said.
In a statement released today Kaja Kallas also strongly condemned “relentless hybrid attacks by Russia and its proxies aimed at undermining the rule of law and democratic process in the Republic of Moldova, fostering destabilisation in the country and fuelling polarisation through massive use of disinformation, vote-buying, cyber-attacks, and training of violent provocateurs.”
“Today, the strength of Moldova’s democracy resonates far beyond its borders,” European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos posted on X. “Despite an open assault on your elections, you withstood a flood of disinformation and interference.”
Marta Kos added that now “the mission starts to unite Moldovans on their journey to the EU.”
