Moldova: EU supports rehabilitation of North-South rail corridor with €32 million investment

[post_audio_speech]

The European Union will invest €32 million in the form of a grant for the rehabilitation of the North-South railway corridor in the Republic of Moldova, a key strategic project for the country’s connectivity with international transport networks.

The agreement was signed on 8 November between the representative of Calea Ferată a Moldovei (CFM) and the representative of Obermeyer Hellas (Greece) and DB Engineering & Consulting (Germany), which won the tender. A total of 375 km of railway will be rehabilitated along the North-South corridor: Vălcineț – Ocnița – Bălți – Ungheni – Chișinău – Căinari.

The funds will support the modernisation of the railway infrastructure, and Obermeyer Hellas and DB Engineering & Consulting will provide support services in supervising the rehabilitation works, thus contributing to Moldova’s integration into European transport networks.

The project is part of the Solidarity Lanes initiative, which was launched by the European Union in 2022, to help Ukraine export its goods and to import what it needs via rail, road and inland waterways.
