Moldova takes another step towards aligning its media with EU recommendations
The Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Moldova, the Moldovan Audiovisual Council, and the German organisation Global Media Registry have signed a Memorandum of Cooperation on media ownership transparency. This document continues Moldova’s alignment of its media with the European Commission’s recommendations on transparency in print and online media on Moldova’s path to EU accession.
The Memorandum of Cooperation is designed to strengthen collaboration between state bodies, public institutions, and civil society, as part of the international Media Ownership Monitor initiative. It tracks ownership of the most influential media outlets, along with their financial and political interests. Under the agreement, the Ministry of Culture commits to ensuring access to public data, helping to share the findings, and advancing media literacy. Meanwhile, the Audiovisual Council will contribute information on media service providers’ ownership and funding sources, provide context on the media market, and work in support of civil society.
The event, hosted on Friday at Europe Café in Chișinău, was opened by Máté Csicsai, Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova, who described the signing of the Memorandum as a key contribution to strengthening core EU principles such as transparency, accountability, and media pluralism.
In November 2024, Global Media Registry and Media Guard launched the Media Ownership Monitor – Moldova, which lists the legal entities and beneficiaries of the country’s most important media outlets, along with information about their backgrounds and political affiliations. The first edition covers 45 media outlets, including the owners of 13 television stations, 9 radio stations, 6 newspapers, 17 online news portals, and 12 local influencers.
