Ukraine: back to school after EU building renovation in Hatne

[post_audio_speech]

On 1 September, Hatne secondary school in the Kyiv region, Ukraine, welcomed students for the new academic year after an extensive renovation funded by the European Investment Bank (EIB). After the reconstruction, the school’s teachers can provide education for more than 1,300 children, including almost 300 from displaced families.

Located just outside the Ukrainian capital, Hatne secondary school was significantly refurbished: its structure was reinforced, and the insulation, roof, classrooms, corridors and canteen were upgraded. Accessibility was also improved during the renovation works.

The EIB provided €1 million for the renovation under the Ukraine Recovery Programme, a €340 million EIB initiative supporting the restoration of local infrastructure across the country. The project began at the end of March 2025 and was completed in less than six months.

We did everything possible to complete this renovation quickly and to the highest standard,” said the head of the Hatne community, Oleksandr Palamarchuk. “Our priority was clear – to make sure children could start the school year in a comfortable, modern and safe school.

Asier Santillán Luzuriaga, Acting Head of Cooperation at the EU Delegation to Ukraine, said: “Renovating schools and social infrastructure means investing in communities and Ukraine’s future, and the EU is proud to support this progress.

The Ukraine Recovery Programme is one of three joint EU–EIB recovery initiatives implemented together with the Ministry for Development of Communities and Territories of Ukraine, the Ministry of Finance and local authorities, with technical support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
