Ukraine Energy Support Fund restores and installs 2 GW of domestic generation capacity ahead of winter

On 15 October, which marks the official start of Ukraine’s heating season, the Energy Community Secretariat (ECS), co-chaired by the European Commission, announced that the Ukraine Energy Support Fund (UESF), had secured €758 million from over 16 international donors. This includes €240 million specifically allocated for winterisation projects.

These specific contributions from the European Union, Germany, and the United States are enabling the installation of 220 MW of distributed gas generation capacity, the repair of 1.8 GW of damaged thermal power plants, and the restoration of vital renewable energy infrastructure.

“Through the Ukraine Energy Support Fund, donors are financing the restoration of around 50% of the priority generation capacities to be added to the grid for the winter of 2024/2025, as identified by the Ukrainian authorities,” said ECS Director, Artur Lorkowski.

The UESF was established to mitigate the impact of Russian attacks on Ukraine’s critical energy infrastructure, enabling governments, international financial institutions, and corporate donors to provide financial support for urgent restoration efforts.
