Ukraine’s recovery and European integration continue with unwavering EU support: watch new episode of the ‘Recovery Diary’

The European Union remains steadfast in its commitment to strengthening Ukraine, ensuring a just and lasting peace, and fully restoring the country. Recovery and reconstruction efforts are ongoing with no interruption. The third episode of the ‘Recovery Diary’, a project by EU NEIGHBOURS East and ICTV, highlights key infrastructure projects and assistance from EU member states.

In Lviv, a modular town for internally displaced persons and rehabilitating military personnel has been built with EU funding as part of the NEFCO Green Recovery for Ukraine project. Beyond providing comfort and essential facilities, the project integrates energy-efficient technologies to enhance sustainability.

Meanwhile, in Lviv Oblast, two vital public facilities have reopened after extensive renovations, St. Luke’s Hospital and the Dzvinochok kindergarten in Truskavets. In just 10 months, the hospital underwent a complete modernisation, including an insulated facade that meets energy efficiency standards, thanks to the support of the EU and its financial institution, the European Investment Bank. The upgraded hospital will now serve 50,000 residents annually.

Another critical area of EU-Ukraine cooperation is the modernisation of Ukraine’s railway system. Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, the railway network has played a vital role in evacuating refugees, delivering humanitarian aid, transporting weapons, and even facilitating diplomatic visits. One key project aims to integrate Ukraine’s railway system into the EU transport network, strengthening connectivity and mobility.

Anna-Kaisa Itkonen, Spokesperson of the European Commission for Energy, Climate, Transport, Housing, and Taxation, emphasised the EU’s financial commitment:

“The EU is providing significant funding to Ukraine through grants. We have included Ukraine in the Connecting Europe Facility, our infrastructure funding programme, which allows Ukraine to apply for EU financial support in areas such as transport, energy, and digital technologies.

“[…] This will have enormous practical benefits for trade, cargo transport, military mobility, and ordinary citizens, who will be able to take advantage of these improvements. And this is also an important step toward Ukraine’s future accession to the European Union. It is already part of its integration into the European system.”
