Most Moldovans trust and have a positive image of the EU, opinion poll finds
More and more Moldovans have a positive image of the European Union (67%), and fewer have a negative image (6%) than at any time since 2016, according to the 2024 annual survey of opinion in the Republic of Moldova.
This latest survey was conducted in March 2024 and involved face-to-face interviews with a representative sample of 1,000 people across the country. The opinion polls have been carried out annually by the EUNEIGHBOURS east Programme in Moldova and the five other countries of the Eastern Partnership since 2016.
More than two-thirds (67%) of Moldovans have a positive image of the EU (+15 on 2016), compared to only 6% who have a negative image (down from 17% in 2016). And with Moldova now an official EU candidate, 76% of respondents say their country has good relations with the EU, up nine points on 2016. Indeed, 59% of those asked (up 10 points since 2023) said they were in favour of EU membership.
The EU is more trusted (by 64% of those asked) than any other international institution.
The citizens of Moldova are very aware of the EU’s financial support to their country (80%), and the EU is considered the highest financial contributor to the country (by 69% of respondents), well above all other foreign institutions or countries. Over half of Moldovans (55%) acknowledge the effectiveness of EU support.
Asked about the areas in which they would like to see greater EU support, 34% said economic development and trade, and 34% health care.
