Access to Environmental Justice in Georgia. 2023

The 2023 baseline study, Access to Environmental Justice in Georgia, highlights systemic and case-specific barriers to environmental justice, despite a strong legal framework. From a gender perspective, the report’s findings are particularly relevant as women, especially those from marginalized communities (e.g., rural areas, ethnic minorities), face compounded challenges in accessing justice and participating in environmental decision-making. The lack of inclusive public hearings, poor access to legal aid, and low environmental awareness disproportionately affect women, who are often underrepresented in decision-making forums and legal processes. The study calls for targeted awareness-raising, inclusive procedures, and capacity-building measures that also address gender-specific barriers, ensuring that environmental justice mechanisms benefit all, including women and girls.
