Employment and gender in Georgia
This policy brief examines gender disparities in employment in Georgia, highlighting the systemic barriers that hinder women’s full participation in the labour market. It explores how women are overrepresented among the economically inactive population, concentrated in low-paid sectors, and underrepresented in formal employment. The brief critically assesses whether Georgia’s employment structures and labour market policies adequately address women’s needs and interests. It draws attention to persistent gender norms, unequal care responsibilities, and limited access to decent work as key obstacles. The publication is part of the UN Women projects ‘Women’s Economic Empowerment in the South Caucasus’, funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and the Austrian Development Cooperation (ADC), and ‘Good Governance for Gender Equality in Georgia’, supported by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
