Enhancing women’s leadership for resilient and peaceful societies
The fact sheet of the Project supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark provides a detailed analysis of women’s participation and representation in the country’s political structures. According to available data, in the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova, 41 out of 100 deputies are women, which represents 41%. Also, in the composition of the Permanent Bureau of the Parliament, over 30% are women, and one of the two positions of vice-president is occupied by a woman. At the level of local public administration, 196 women occupy the position of mayor, representing almost 22% of all mayoralties.
These statistics reflect significant progress in promoting gender equality in Moldovan politics, indicating a positive trend in increasing the representation of women in decision-making positions. However, it is essential to continue implementing and monitoring measures that support the active participation of women in politics, in order to ensure balanced representation and to respond to the national and international commitments of the Republic of Moldova in the field of women’s rights and gender equality.
The informative note focuses on advancing women’s leadership to strengthen societal resilience and peace in the context of the European and Central Asian region, with specific interventions in Moldova, Ukraine, and Georgia. The document emphasises the importance of empowering women in leadership roles, particularly in efforts to eliminate violence against women and girls, and promoting gender equality in peace and security initiatives. It outlines strategies for enhancing women’s participation in governance and peace-building processes, with the overarching aim to create more inclusive, stable, and peaceful societies. The intervention is expected to span from 2024 to 2027, with a budget of 1.94 million USD allocated for Moldova’s development.
