Shadow mayorship: Study on the representation of women and men in elective positions at the mayorship level

This study developed by the Development Partnership Centre analyses gender representation in mayoral positions following the November 2023 local elections in the Republic of Moldova. It highlights the persistent underrepresentation of women in the role of mayors, despite legislative efforts to promote gender equality.

The monitoring report analyses the representation of men and women as candidates, their presence in the position of mayors, as well as identifying the barriers that women and men face in the electoral process for this elective position. At the same time, the analysis also examines candidates’ access of to the media, covering four types of media products: news, talk shows, electoral debates and electoral spots. The purpose of this monitoring initiative is to identify the level of women’s presence in the television media during the electoral campaign and correlate this with their presence on candidate lists.
