Women and poverty in Georgia

This policy brief explores the gendered dimensions of poverty in Georgia, emphasising that women and men experience poverty differently due to systemic inequalities across the labour market, family roles, access to social protection, and political participation. The brief identifies the main drivers of poverty affecting women — such as limited employment opportunities, the burden of unpaid care work, and gaps in social safety nets — and underscores the feminisation of poverty as a persistent issue. Developed by UN Women Georgia with support from SDC, ADC, and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the document offers targeted policy recommendations to address gender disparities in poverty and promote women’s economic empowerment.
