Women and social protection in Georgia
This policy brief explores the gendered dimensions of Georgia’s social protection system, emphasising the importance of integrating a gender equality approach to ensure equitable access for women and men. While social protection in Georgia primarily aims at poverty alleviation and preventing extreme poverty, existing schemes often fail to account for gender-specific risks and needs. The brief outlines how current programmes respond to women’s vulnerabilities, including their disproportionate burden of unpaid care work, lower labour market participation, and exposure to economic insecurity. It calls for gender-sensitive reform of social protection policies to enhance women’s economic security and resilience. The document was developed by UN Women Georgia as part of the projects ‘Women’s Economic Empowerment in the South Caucasus’, funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and the Austrian Development Cooperation (ADC) and ‘Good Governance for Gender Equality in Georgia’, supported by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
