Creative Europe to support projects to boost literary translation in 2026
The EU-funded Creative Europe programme invites publishers to apply before 29 January 2026 to get funding for the translation, publication, distribution, and promotion of European literary works of fiction. The scheme has a total budget of €5 million.
The call is open to Armenia, Georgia, and Ukraine, as countries participating in Creative Europe.
Organisations from the book and publishing sector can apply individually or as a consortium of at least two eligible organisations. Each project must have a sound editorial, distribution, and promotion strategy. It must also propose a minimum of five eligible works of fiction written by authors who are nationals of, or residents in, or recognised as part of the literary heritage of a country participating in the Creative Europe programme.
Applicants can apply with projects of different sizes:
- Small scale: projects proposing at least 5 translations of eligible works;
- Medium scale: projects proposing at least 11 translations of eligible works;
- Large scale: projects proposing at least 21 translations of eligible works (only for consortia).
In addition, as part of the exceptional support to Ukraine, applicants will be encouraged to propose activities facilitating the circulation/translation of books from and/or into Ukraine, as well as their translation into or from Ukrainian. In addition, projects aimed at providing books in the Ukrainian language to Ukrainian refugees and displaced people will be encouraged. In this context, the printing in Ukrainian of (non-translated) Ukrainian books will be eligible.
Thanks to the programme, every year around 500 different titles are translated for the first time from around 40 source languages into around 30 target languages, published, and promoted across Europe.
