Ukrainians can keep their driving licence in the EU, say European Parliament
On 7 July, members of the European Parliament backed a proposal by the European Commission to allow Ukrainian refugees to retain their national driving licence.
Ukrainians who fled Russia’s invasion and have temporary protected status will be able to continue using their Ukrainian driving licence without having to exchange it for an EU one or take a new driving test.
If a driving licence is stolen or lost, EU countries will be able to issue a new EU driving licence. In order to do so, the driver must prove that they hold a valid driving licence in Ukraine and submit a certificate that they are physically and mentally fit to drive.
Under certain conditions, Ukrainian refugees employed as truck and bus drivers can have their certificates of professional competence recognised by the Ukrainian authorities in the EU, after passing a short training course and a test. This would allow them to work in the EU during a period of temporary protection and to help export Ukrainian goods.
The draft regulations must now be formally adopted by the EU Council. The regulation will enter into force five days after its publication in the Official Journal of the EU.
